Distribution is Africa south of the Sahara Huge animal with long thick legs and large ears. It's trunk is versatile acting as nose and hand. Usually has long tusks. Bulls are larger than cows and has larger and heavier tusks. Found in areas ranging from the arid Kaokoland to dense forest and savanna or forest with a high rainfall. Clear drinking water, other permanent water, shade and enough food (grass and leaves, branches) are essential. Dependant on water. Diurnal and nocturnal. Gregarious, herds consists of a cow (Matriarch) and her descendants. Bulls form temporary male herds or live alone, especially the old ones, only joining the cows for mating. Large breeding herds with bulls also exists. It shows aggression when it lifts it head and trunk, spreads it's ears outward and trumpets, or kicks up dust. When drinking water they wash themselves by spraying water over them with their trunks, or the enter the water to cool off. They enjoy wallowing in mud and rubbing on trees. They eat branches, grass, leaves, bark, reed and fruit. Drinks water daily but can survive up to four days without water. Water must be clear, they also dig for water thus creating waterhole's for other animals.
