Distribution is South Africa, northern Libya, Tunisia, northern Algeria and northern Marocco. The coat is bright fawn spotted with white in summer and white underneath. Both black and white individuals are common. Antlers - the beam above the trez tine is palmated with a number of points on the rear edge. Only the males have antlers which they shed annually. Males are larger than females. The deer has a remarkable adaptability and can make itself at home in a wide variety of habitats from woodland to mountain ranges. The stag shed their antlers (which usually lack the bez tine) in early spring, and the growth of the older male's antlers is complete by October - November. The rut occurs during March or April. When mating is over, the stags leave the herd and live alone or in small bands.
