Restricted to the arid zones of south-western Africa, the springbok occurs in Namibia, south-western Angola, Botswana and South Africa (Wilson & Reeder, 1993). Its distribution map was obtained from Skinner & Smithers (1990), but was subsequently updated following Dr. R East’s suggestions (23 June '97), including all of South Africa, where the species has been largely introduced and reintroduced.

The species is typically found in open, dry savanna and grasslands in the Kalahari and Karoo biomes (East, 1989; Lynch, 1983; Wilson, 1989; Kingdon, 1997).
